Project Information
The Gwa’sala-’Nakwaxda’xw Nations Bighouse, or Gukwdzi, is an essential cultural project, symbolizing resilience, heritage, and reconciliation for the Gwa’sala-’Nakwaxda’xw community. Set to become a focal point for gatherings, ceremonies, and cultural preservation, this Bighouse has deep meaning for a Nation that, for over 60 years, has been without a dedicated cultural space after relocation in 1964. The Bighouse’s design incorporates traditional elements, including intricately carved house poles crafted by community members during the 2019 pandemic, and signifies the revival of cultural traditions in a purpose-built space on their land.
